Propranolol: Potential Under-recognised Risk of Harm

The Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch (HSIB) has conducted a patient safety investigation to explore the under recognised toxicity of propranolol in overdose. There has been a steady rise in the number of propranolol prescriptions issued to NHS patients. Between 2012 and 2017 there was a 33 per cent increase in the number of deaths reported as being linked to propranolol overdose. The reference event in this national investigation centres on the death of a 24-year old woman who took an overdose of both propranolol and citalopram.

The HSIB has made seven safety recommendations as a result of this investigation to organisations including NICE, the BNF and PrescQIPP.
